A extended voyage circling the Land Down Under was terminated in the wake of the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was abandoned by the ship on a remote coastal location.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but separated from the excursion for a pause. The ship left without her and came back later that day after the ship staff realised the passenger was not present.

A major hunt found her remains the next day.

Authorities are investigating the incident, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator stated that passengers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the rest of the voyage had been called off due to the "sad loss and previous technical problems".

Via official communication, he mentioned that passengers would be issued a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the passengers via private aircraft".

Authorities also issued an updated statement, and said they had "delivered a notice to the Master" prohibiting any further travelers from entering the ship.

The official said that they would visit the liner in Cairns upon its arrival.

Sequence of Events

The ship initially left the Australian port on 24 October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the point of the senior passenger's demise. The remote island was the opening port on the voyage.

Guests on board - who usually pay large sums of money to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a daily excursion with the option of walking or snorkelling.

Relatives Statement

The offspring of the victim said that her loved ones was "stunned and distressed that the vessel left the location after an scheduled outing without my mum".

In her statement, she characterized her parent as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a participant of a walking group.

"According to scant facts we have been informed, it appears that there was a lapse of care and common sense," she stated.

She continued that she desired the investigation would be able to identify what "the organization should have done that might have preserved Mother's existence".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a extremely warm period, and mother became unwell on the uphill trek," she revealed.

"She was asked her to head down, without accompaniment. Then the vessel departed, apparently without performing a headcount.

"During some point in that sequence, or not long after, she succumbed, without company."

Company Reaction

In a statement, the CEO affirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with officials to support their examination".

He stated that the organization was "deeply sorry that this has occurred" and had provided its total backing to the relatives.

Cruise Industry Practices

The vessel caters for up to 120 travelers with 46 crew, according to company information. It was specially constructed to reach remote areas of the nation's shoreline and is outfitted with "small boats" - small boats used to ferry travelers on land visits.

Incidents of this nature are rare, and passenger vessels have protocols to document which passengers are getting on or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," an authority stated.

Cruise lines take these processes extremely carefully and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such events from happening," the authority continued.

"This is probably a surprising - and tragic - one-off."
