The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
