The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
