Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
